Dear visitors of this page and dear and respected donators!

ST. JOSEPH´S GIRL´S HOME, BOLAWALANA, NEGOMBO, Srí Lanka was going on.

YOU WILL ALWAYS FIND THE LATEST NEW AT THE MOST UPPER POSITION.

24.8.

This day was arranged that the van will pick up at one crossroad and then we will go together for kitchen equipment. The oldie – owner welcomed us warmly and everything runned as last time, only the pile was a little lower, but we have bought all important what they needed (only we had to limit the wishes of manager and lady – stuff as their demands started slowly to go up. After counting the costs I still have some lower sum of money.

We decided, Rohan and me, that for this money we want to buy something more personal just for the boys, and that we want to make our own choice. Therefore we send loaded van back to orphanage and we move by tuc tuc to stationery. There we buy needed exercise books, pencils, sharpeners, rubbers for school, blackboard, textbooks with many pictures and also picture posters on the wall (animals, fruits and vegetables, transport vehicles, multiplication table, musical instruments, good and bad habits), nice wax crayon and drawing books for everybody. Rohan has got idea to buy cricket paddles because cricket is sport number 1 at SL, like football for us. We buy then 3 cricket paddles of different sizes and 4 tennis balls. And still some money remains and for it we want to buy pencil box for every boy. But I have not enough money for 20 boxes. And what is beautiful? The owner of this small shop gave us the discount for every goods and now moreover he gives us about 10 pencil boxes free and he writes it to the bill as especial price discount.

I have already no one ruppies from gathered money, then we move to orphanage to make over the rest of goods and to make imortant documentation.

23.8.
We have no more motorbike to move so we call tuk tuk driver to take us to 2. orphanage, it is about 20 km far from Negombo. Here we see much poorer situation than in 1.orphanage. This one arised approximately half a year ago and at present there are 20 boys from 4 to 13 age years old. Look at the photoes. We see 6 bunk beds, the rest beds are made from roughly worked wood and some of them have the mattrasses that are filled with dry grass similarly like straw mattrasses by us a long time ago. Every 3 boys have their personal things jamed in one cupboard and some of them have it on the floor behind the heads of their beds. I see only few ripped mosquito nets. We go to the class room, this place serves together as the dining room. There are several long wooden tables, where the boys study and eat, several chairs and almost empty walls. The kitchen has only necessary equipment. The outside showers stick out from the rough concrete wall, the toilets are turkish, but these things are now no more surprising for me, I know that it has also its advantages that is easy to keep it clean.

I immediatelly decide, here is higher need to cover the missing necessities. I believe that evry donater from my country the Czech Republicwill agrre with me. I ask manager and 2 ladies – stuff what do they consider as the most important things for the boys. The following list is written: another bunk beds, mattrasses, bed sheets, mosquito nets, another cupboard for the personal things, manager asks the tabe and cupboard, too and turning chair (but finally we decided that one wrting table must be enough for him), black shoes to school for every boy as a part of school uniform, some school needs as exercise books, pens, kitchen equipmet.

And how it was going on? Orphanage has to disposal small van, so at first we go with manager and one lady – stuff by van directly to producer of iron cupboards. We buy 4 cupboards in order to evry 2 boys have 1 cupboard in common, than at the same place we buy one writing table for office. Directly in producer place we get the goods app. 1/3 cheaper. We go the same day to make a choice of bunk beds, also to the producer, the beds are not ready, they must produce them yet, the price is acceptable, so I make the order. But the price of the mattrasses in this shop seems to Rohan to be too high. He call his friends and gets advice where we can get the same for significant lower price. Really, we are happy that we could spare a lot of money. Then we go to the near market where we expect to get cheaper the mosquito nets and bed sheets. It takes long time to make right choice and to bargain lower prices. The owner is able to gather the goods of such plentity (20 nets, 40 sheets) no sooner then in 2 hours, we agree to wait. Rohan again negotiated very advantageous price for us.Than we want to buy the kitchen equipment at the market, too, but when we see that here the goods has wrong quality and is expensive, we decide to go next day to the same place where we were first by buying it for the 1.orphanage, even it is quite far. So yet we buy some necessary washong and cleaning needs, toothbrush and toothpaste for every boy (we think about those liitle ones, they will get the toothbrushes of smaller size). We also visit one small shoes shop but there it is clear that they can not have enough of shoes of different sizes, they recommend us where it is better to go. Wer send the van for the boys, the must come and try the shoes themselves, I do not believe that all 20 boys can arrive together in van, but they convince me that this is fir them very usual, so, you yourselve can also convince of it from photoes. We go to the recommended place and World Wonder! We just stay in front of BATA shop. They are going to be closed for middle pause but they will wait for boys with pleasure, to sell 20 shoes together is surely excellent bussiness for them. The van with boys is coming in about 25 minutes, we try to organize all somewhat but late yet every boy want to be at the same place where the shoes are choiced. A little bit of press never mind to everybody. They pick out the shoes approximately 2 size larger, that seem to me to be to much, but finally I find it right, first their feed will enlarge and second they are used to wear so called vietnam shoes or to gore without any shoes therefore the shoes exat to their size could them press. Look at the photoes the boys were really lucky. And more we have bought to everybody two pairs of black socks that is also a component of school uniform. Than quickly for mosquito nets and sheeds and for this day our mission finishes.

22.8.
Return to Negombo. The journay is long and boring and it takes with several stops till late afternoon.

30.7. – 21.8.
I have got grippe maybe from constant changes of cold in ac shops, where we have made shopping for the orphanage and from heat and dust on the streets.

I travel a little throughout SL, I go to Pinnewala to see the elephant orphanage, that is lovely experience.

Then to Kandy where is just on one of the most important religous event in the whole Asia and so much attractive for foreigners called Esala Perahera. 10 days of celebration is closed every evening by procession, that is from the 5th day of beginning this event followed by huge parade of ceremonial dress elephant decorated by perls and gems. I saw about 35 elephants and it was really magnificent show, these first elephants in parade are the most respectable and experienced and it is hard to believe that they really march by dance steps in rhytm of drums and songs. The top is last day when in the streets of Kandy march up to 60 elephants.

Then to Knuckles Range, the region of green hills and mountains with splendis untouched nature, to Sigiria, where I was before. I visite here friends and acquintances.

Then transfer to Trincomalee. Trinco is the most of all attractive for its beautiful white beaches, calm turquoise seaand perfect chance for snorckling and diving by the Pigeon Island. There is no need to add more coloours to reality. The town is well known from ancient times as one of the deepest and best natural harbours in the world.

I get the whole white and empty wall of one hotel to paint and withióut any order, I am absolutely free. Look at the photos to see the result. I paint also 4 small oil paintings with the motives from close neighbour and traditional fishing.

I go to see the hot springs in Kanniyai and ancient temple Velgam Vihara.

The days are flying and it is desirable to think about return to Negombo. I had enough time to consider how to use the most effective way trh rest of money gained for the orphanage. Slowly such decision was matured that the priority must get those who lives under the worse conditions. So I want to visit the other 2. orphanage in neighbour of Negombo. First I must see the local life there ang then I can decide.

29.7.
We are again in orphanage. The sister present long list, all seems to be reasonble. But later for my questin what more? She proposes tableclothes. At this moment I started to be upset in my mind, I did not expected such a wish, tablecloths under such cinditions ar for something like real over standard of living. I get on well with guide Rohan, that we will buy only what we consider as necessery. He knows the place where we can get the goods 1/3 cheaper. So we go on motorbike directly to the producer and the whole saler together and we hope that he will transport the goods free of charge directly to the place. Later we get his promise therefor the pile of kitchen necessities is growing and growing. The owner is charming old man with pinny and without teeth and even if he is very good – hearted it evident that he keeps his bussiness strongly in his hands.

It took almost 5 hours to make a choice, to count, to control and again to count everything. It is true that people at SL do not work at the double, but I must admit and I knew it on my own skin and dry tongue that there is no other way in such heat climate.

For the goods of very good quality we have payed 66 322 RS altogether , that means almost ¼ of the amount that is to my disposal. Look at the photos, you can see really high pile. Look at the scanned bills of every item with added Czech translation of mine. I promised to everybody and to me myself that all amount consigned to me will be used as much as efficient way as it is possible. I solve in my mind the question what to do with the rest of money, still I have too much, it is 252 686 – 66 322 = 186 360 RS. And still I have to think about the tableclothes and I tell to myself, now at this while I shall not offer to the sisters from this orphanage another money, I must think everything over very carefully.

We go directly to the orphanage, lorry of the owner of the shop carries the goods and Rohań and me we go again by motorbike. In orphanage there the girls help carry tho googs away and I take the snaps to get important documentation.

Rohan knows another orphanage (I call it 2. orphanage) recently open, for a change there are only the boys living and there the conditions for living are worse, they are supposedly missing even beds and mattrasses. But I solve dilemma because I collected money for the orphanage St. Joseph´s Girl´s Home, Bolawalana and so I still think that money should be used here in this 1.orphanadge. But, but I am still thinking that here the tablecklothes were asked but there maybe they are missing even beds. Fairly large diffrence, not insignificant, is not it? I must let it be „mature“, when I look at it from a distance, I hope to be more wise.

And that is all for the time being.

28.7.

At first to change dollars for rupies, I follow the advice of experienced guide Rohan Pinghe and change 2 203 USD in exchange office in Negombo in undermentioned course

1USD = 114,7 RS, that is 2 200 USD x 114,7 = 252 340 RS and rest 3 USD in worse course 1USD = 114,0 RS, that is 3 USD x 114 = 342 RS

Together we have 252 340 + 342 = 252 682 RS

Then I go with Rohan by motorbike to the orphanage St. Joseph´s Girl´s Home, Bolawalana, Negombo. Rohan has learnt before that what is the most important for them is a large water tank (this is install on the concrete pillars and concrete basement), the price is app. 3000 USD, but I do not have so much money. From similar reason the idea to build up showers and better toilets had to be casted aside. We demand then the sister who is present to prepare after the deliberation with the others the list tho most important equipment for kitchens, there are 3 there, because each from 3 blocks has its own kitchen. I ask if it would be for them easier to cook on gas range but they explain me that gas cooker are very quickly damaged there due to high humidity and salt atmosphere and also to buy new and new gas cylinders is for them too expansive. I start to understand slowly that no in every case is possible to screw european ideas and habits to sri lankan conditions.

27.7.
Arrival on Monday at 4:25 of local time to airport Bandaranayike and then transport to Negombo.

26.7.
Departure on Sunday at 7:25 from Prague via Paris and Rome to Colombo, the flight took more than 16 hours, add another 4 hours of waitng at the airports, uff, it is time to start with direct flight from Prague to SL again.

During the course of the AMBIT ART exhibition, an auction was taken place whose aim was and is to promote the home for orphans and children from problematic families – the orphanage ST. JOSEPH´S GIRL´S HOME, BOLAWALANA, NEGOMBO, Sri Lanka.

The orphanage in Negombo brings up and provides shelter, food and education to little and young girls aged from 5 to 18 years. Up to 150 children are accommodated in compounds, each containing bedrooms with 50 bunk beds, very badly equipped kitchen, inconvenient bathrooms and toilets (see the photographs).

The artists presenting their works of art in this exhibition decided to offer their works in an auction at very good prices. It should be underlined that all financial means collected through the auction will be used straight in the orphanage and strictly to buy the necessary equipment for the kitchens and sanitary facilities and to negotiate and finance particular works of the craftsmen.

THE FINAL BUDGET WITH INVOICES WILL BE PUBLISHED ON THE INTERNET AND THE PROGRESS OF WORKS ILLUSTRATED BY PHOTOS!

The auction proceeded as follows: The auction was announced during the opening reception and continued during the course of the exhibition. The artworks in auction were shown in a specific place and accompanied with documents (containing the author’s name, name of the work of art, year of creation and the starting price). A potential bidder has written his or her name into the document and added his contact details and the price (the same or higher than the starting price) at which he or she was willing to buy the artwork in auction. The name of any other bidder offering the same or higher price was also put into the document and at the same time, the previous bidders was notified of the increased price.

The result of the auction was announced on the last day of the exhibition, on 31 May 2009 at 12 a.m.

Guarantee for all the artists:
